Tibetan incenses are typically made from a combination of between 20 and 100 different herbs, woods, spices and minerals. The ingredients are carefully dried and then ground down and mixed into a paste. This is squeezed and shaped into long sticks which are cut and then dried. Incense recipes specifying the exact nature and amount of each ingredient were said to be formulated at the time of the Buddha some 2500 years ago. They were taken, along with the teachings of Buddha to Tibet and the craft of making incense was established by the monastic community. Since the invasion of Tibet by China in 1951, the ancient craft of incense making, together with the original recipes on which it is based, is now mainly practised by Tibetan monks, nuns and refugees living in India, Nepal and Bhutan.
These incenses are used for a great many purposes: as an offering to the Three Jewels; to still the mind and aid relaxation and meditation; to heal physical and mental disorders; to alleviate stress and insomnia; to ward off negativity and to scent the air.
