TIBETAN INCENSE

Tibetan incenses are typically made from a combination of between 20 and 100 different herbs, woods, spices and minerals. The ingredients are carefully dried and then ground down and mixed into a paste. This is squeezed and shaped into long sticks which are cut and then dried. Incense recipes specifying the exact nature and amount of each ingredient were said to be formulated at the time of the Buddha some 2500 years ago. They were taken, along with the teachings of Buddha to Tibet and the craft of making incense was established by the monastic community. Since the invasion of Tibet by China in 1951, the ancient craft of incense making, together with the original recipes on which it is based, is now mainly practised by Tibetan monks, nuns and refugees living in India, Nepal and Bhutan.

These incenses are used for a great many purposes: as an offering to the deities; to still the mind as an aid to relaxation and meditation; to heal disorders of the mind and body; to alleviate stress; to ward off negativity and to scent the air.

These boxes will allow you to both store and burn Tibetan incense. Each box contains a galvanised metal tray on which a length of burning incence is laid. Incense burns more slowly and aromatically in this way than it would do when positioned vertically. The box also contains a drawer to store pieces of incense up to 15.5 cms long. The front panel of the box is finished in either a dragon or snow lion design - click on the picture to see both of these.

This incense is hand made in Nepal from 25 ingredients following the Tibetan scriptural texts and instructions of Dr Pasang Yonten. Most of the rare herbs used are growing naturally in the Himalayas. They are carefully collected to protect the environment and shade dried to preserve their scent and quality. The incense is entirely free from any synthetic substances.
