The Sufi mystical sect of Islam has many followers from Turkey through Syria, Iraq and Iran to the Indian subcontinent. Each culture has left its imprint on Sufism and its music and so there is no identifiable musical form that would constitute "Sufi music". However, Sufi songs are often characterised by the way in which the emotions experienced in earthly love are used as an analogy for love of God: Sufis approach God through music and dance with the feelings and intensity of a lover .
This album presents live recordings of songs from Benares (1999), Srinagar(1979) and Teheran (1955). Instruments used include: harmonium, dholak ( a barrel drum), santoor, sitar, tabla, Zarb (Iranian drum). The accompanying booklet gives background information about the Sufi movement and its emergence from Islam as well as details about the music and the instruments used.
