Hossam Ramzy brings together dance music from all over the Arab world drawing on styles from Egypt, Morrocco, Lebanon, Kuwait and Saudia Arabia. The music is boyant and pulsating and there is a variety of moods and rhythms. The artists of the Hossam Ramzy ensemble bring attack to their playing and there are some delightful improvised solo sequences. Instruments include quarter-tone accordion, ney flute, aud, violin, trumpet, saxaphone, horns, and, of course, a variety of drums.
RAI means 'opinion', and relates to the feelings of youth, especially when these feelings are at odds with the world at large. The word comes out of Algeria but the concept holds throughout the Middle East. The music on this album captures the spirit of this but is quite distinctive from Algerian Rai music.
