Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhva) is the historical figure who fully established Buddhism in Tibet - it is still possible to visit the caves where he is known to have lived and meditated. He is known by Tibetans as 'the lotus born' (Padmasambhava) and is seen as the second Buddha. He is an especially important figure within the Nyimgma and Kagyu lineages. Guru Rinpoche burried treasures of teachings (Terma) which would only be found when people were ready to recieve the wisdom they contained. He is also credited with the following prophecy about the spread of Tibetan Buddhism to the West:
When the iron bird flies and horses run on wheels The Tibetan people will be scattered like ants across the world And the Dharma will come to the land of the red man.
This is a superb representation of Padmasmbhava.
