Tibetans have an ancient tradition of presenting an offering scarf as a greeting or symbol of devotion. When offering a Kata it symbolises the pure motivation of the individual making the offering. Katas are usually offered to Lamas, dignitaries, sacred images or places prior to requesting their help in the form of prayers or in the receiving of an initiation or blessing. They come in a variety of sizes and colours and can be adorned with auspicious emblems or made from the finest silks.
